Parks Hits Solo Home Run as Skyhawks Fall, 3-2, at URI

KINGSTON, R.I. (March 19, 2025) – Senior Sam Parks led the Stonehill College baseball team with a 1-for-2 outing at the plate, including a pair of walks and a solo home run, as the Skyhawks dropped a narrow 3-2 decision at the University of Rhode Island Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks fell to 4-12 overall, while the Rams improved to 12-8 on the season.

  • Graduate student Jack Thorbahn also recorded a hit on the afternoon, improving his on-base streak to 15 straight games.
  • Senior Max Brulport, sophomore Justin Tullishand the first-year duo of Mason Hebert and Josh Florence combined to keep the Rams off the board over 5.0 innings of relief with three combined strikeouts.
  • Senior Brody McKenzie drove home two of URI's three runs on the afternoon with one hit and a sacrifice bunt.
  • Senior Anthony DePino, sophomore Reece Moroney, and redshirt sophomore Will Hindle registered respective two-hit afternoons for the Rams.
  • Sophomore Josh Kopetski earned his first career win on the mound after striking out three over 2.0 innings of work, while sophomore Joe Sabbath secured his fourth save of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, the University of Rhode Island (URI) broke the deadlock, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman Ryan Thompson led off the inning with a triple to right field and was driven home a batter later by a sacrifice fly from redshirt senior Rob Butler. McKenzie capped off the scoring in the second inning by plating Hindle with an infield single, giving URI an early 2-0 lead.

Stonehill threatened to respond in the top of the third, advancing a runner into scoring position at second base. However, the Rams' bullpen worked out of the jam by inducing an infield fly and ending the threat with a strikeout of senior Taylor Gaspar. URI extended its advantage to 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth when McKenzie drove in his second run of the day, scoring Hindle with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher.

Stonehill broke through in the top of the sixth, scoring their first run of the game. After Sengenberger singled into shallow right field, he advanced to third on back-to-back walks drawn by sophomore Ryan LeClair and freshman Brayden Rader. With the bases loaded and Parks at the plate, a wild pitch allowed all runners to advance a base, enabling Sengenberger to score and cutting the deficit to 3-1.

In the top of the eighth, a clutch swing from Parks brought Stonehill within one run, narrowing the gap to 3-2 as the game neared its conclusion. Stonehill's Hebert entered the game in the bottom of the eighth and retired the Rams in order, giving the Skyhawks' bats one last chance for a comeback. However, URI's Sabbath took the mound in the final frame, striking out two batters and securing the narrow 3-2 victory for the Rams.
