HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning, Stonehill broke the deadlock by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings. In the second, Rickert started the rally with a double over the head of the Hawks' right fielder. He advanced to third on a deep fly ball by sophomore
Ryan LeClair. A batter later, Rickert scored when Rader laced an RBI single up the middle, giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
Following a 1-2-3 inning from Douglas on the mound in the top of the third, Stonehill extended its lead. McGee came around to score in the bottom of the third after advancing around the bases, ultimately crossing the plate on a two-out RBI double by Sparr into the right-centerfield gap, making it 2-0.
However, despite holding a 2-0 advantage entering the fourth, UMES erupted for seven runs to take a commanding 7-2 lead. The Hawks' offensive outburst was sparked by three RBI base hits from graduate student
Jason Brown and redshirt junior
Ansel Carson, along with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, an infield sacrifice, and a solo home run off the bat of Jimenez.
Over the next five innings, UMES' pitching staff silenced the Stonehill bats, allowing just two hits during that stretch. Meanwhile, the Hawks added seven more runs to seal a decisive 14-3 victory over the Skyhawks.
