Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup to Brown in Extra Innings

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (March 25, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped its midweek matchup against non-conference opponent, Brown University, 7-4, in 10 innings Tuesday evening at the Attanasio Family Field at Murray Stadium in Providence, Rhode Island. With the defeat, the Skyhawks fell to 6-14 on the season, while the Bears improved to 3-14 overall.

HIGHLIGHTS
  • Junior Sean McGee had a strong day at the plate for Stonehill, going 3-for-4 with a double.
  • Sophomore Grayson Sparr extended his Northeast Conference-leading RBI mark to 25 after launching a two-run homerun, marking his sixth round-tripper of the campaign.
  • Senior Sam Parks increased his hitting streak to an active team-leading seven games, while junior Michael Rickert extended his on-base streak to eight straight.
  • Junior Gio Arzuaga had a career-best relief appearance for the Skyhawks, striking out a career-high six batters and only allowing one hit over 3.0 innings of work.
  • Freshman Christian Butera led Brown at the dish, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, double, and two RBI.
  • Senior Gunner Boree sealed the victory for the Bears with a walk-off three-run blast in the bottom of the 10th, marking his third homerun of the season.
  • Senior Santhosh Gottam secured his first win of the season on the mound for Brown, pitching the top of the 10th inning and holding the Skyhawks off the board.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, with five of the first six batters reaching base. With the bases loaded and senior Taylor Gaspar at the plate, the Skyhawks' starting right fielder worked a five-pitch walk, forcing in a run and giving Stonehill the game's first lead. Moments later, a wild pitch from Brown's freshman starter, Ian Keusch, allowed Sparr to score after reaching base earlier in the inning via a walk.

The Skyhawks extended their lead in the top of the fifth inning, thanks to a single swing of the bat. After a leadoff bloop single into shallow center field by Parks, Sparr launched a two-run home run over the left-center field fence, increasing Stonehill's lead to 4-0 midway through the non-conference matchup.

Stonehill's pitching staff, consisting of junior Jake Lanzer, senior Max Brulport, freshman Josh Florenceand Arzuaga, effectively stifled Brown's offense through the first seven innings. Over that span, they allowed just six baserunners, three hits and three walks. However, the Bears mounted a comeback in the bottom of the eighth. RBI doubles from Butera and junior Mark Henshon, along with an infield error by the Skyhawks, resulted in four runs, tying the game.

The teams went scoreless in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the 10th, McGee led off with a double down the left-field line, later advancing to third on an infield sacrifice by sophomore Ryan LeClair. However, an inning-ending double play kept the score knotted as the game headed to the bottom half of the inning.

After a one-out double from senior Conor Cooke and a walk to senior Nathan Brasher, Boree stepped up to the plate and delivered a three-run walk-off home run over the center-field fence, completing Brown's comeback and securing a 7-4 victory over Stonehill.
