HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless opening inning in which both teams advanced a runner into scoring position, Wagner struck first in the bottom of the second. Sophomore
Connor Roche and freshman
Matt Sutera led off with back-to-back singles. Roche eventually crossed the plate for the first run of the game after graduate student
Xavier Ulrich grounded into a double play, giving Wagner a 1-0 lead.
Stonehill quickly responded in the top of the third, tying the game at 1-1. Rickert delivered an RBI double to the warning track in right field, scoring sophomore
Ryan LeClair, who had earlier reached base on a single through the left side. However, Wagner regained the lead in the bottom of the third when senior
Bryce Phelps drilled an RBI single through the right side of the infield.
For the next two and a half innings, both starting pitchers, Douglas and Toporek, settled into a rhythm, allowing just two hits between them. In the bottom of the sixth, Wagner's offense exploded for six runs. The Seahawks took advantage of two run-scoring doubles, one from Roche and another from sophomore
Diego Tavarez—as well as RBI singles from graduate student
Lukas Torres and Sutera, extending the lead to 8-1 heading into the final third of the series opener.
Although Stonehill managed to plate a run in the seventh on an RBI single down the left field line from Thorbahn, Wagner's commanding lead proved insurmountable, and the Seahawks secured an 8-2 victory.
