HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Stonehill struck first in the top of the second. Thorbahn extended his impressive early-season form, launching his fourth home run of the year over the opposite-field wall, giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
However, High Point quickly seized control in the bottom of the second, putting up six runs to take a commanding 6-1 lead. The Panthers' offensive outburst was fueled by timely hits from redshirt-junior
Christian Smith, junior
Brayden Simpson, McCarter, and Johnson, along with two bases-loaded walks drawn by seniors
Konni Durschlag and
Miggy Echazaretta.
Stonehill responded in the top of the fourth, with Cohall leading off the inning by hitting a near-identical fly ball to Thorbahn's earlier homer, this time over the left field fence to trim the lead to 6-2. However, High Point answered with five more runs over the fourth and fifth innings, extending their lead.
In the eighth, Stonehill mounted another attempt at a comeback, scoring two runs thanks to High Point transfer junior
Sean McGee. With senior
Sam Parks in scoring position, McGee ripped his first double of the season down the left field line, bringing Parks home. Despite this effort, the Panthers' lead proved too insurmountable, and Stonehill ultimately fell 11-4 in the first game of its three-game series.
