Baseball Splits Series Opening Doubleheader at CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (May 10, 2025) – The Stonehill College baseball team split its series opening doubleheader against Northeast Conference (NEC) opponent Central Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks took game one 5-2, before the Blue Devils bounced back in game two with a high-scoring 12-8 triumph.

GAME ONE: Stonehill 5 (19-25, 17-8 NEC), Central Conn. 2 (25-12, 20-5 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stonehill wasted no time seizing an early lead, plating two runs in the top of the first inning. Senior Sam Parks raced home to open the scoring on a throwing error by the Blue Devils' catcher, followed by an RBI double from sophomore Grayson Sparr, which drove in junior Sean McGee after he reached on a fielder's choice.

On the mound, junior Jimmy Gilleran dominated through the early innings, holding Central Connecticut State hitless until two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Though the Blue Devils finally broke up the no-hitter, Gilleran calmly navigated out of the inning to preserve the shutout heading into the sixth.

The Skyhawks extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the sixth when sophomore Aidan Sengenberger launched a solo home run over the right field wall. Stonehill continued to threaten in the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but junior starter Drew Munn held firm to keep the deficit at three.

In the bottom of the seventh, after CCSU put two runners on, Stonehill turned to closer Adam Martin, who entered in pursuit of an eight-out save. Martin immediately shut the door on the rally, stranding both runners and keeping the score intact heading into the eighth.

Stonehill added two insurance runs in the top of the eighth, pushing the lead to 5-0. CCSU made one final push in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the deficit to three on a two-run home run by graduate student Colby Brouillette. However, Martin closed out the game without further damage, sealing a 5-2 victory for the Skyhawks in the opening contest of the doubleheader.

INSIDE THE BOX & NOTES
  • Gilleran secured his sixth win and fifth quality start of the season after holding CCSU scoreless and to two hits over 6.1 innings, during which he struck out a career-high nine batters.
  • Martin posted his sixth save and he is now tied for the NEC lead with Justin Ritz of Coppin State.
  • Sengenberger belted his fifth homerun of the season, while Sparr and junior Aidan Cohall each added extra-base hits for the Skyhawks.

GAME TWO: Central Conn. 12 (26-12, 21-5 NEC), Stonehill 8 (19-26, 17-9 NEC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Blue Devils wasted no time getting on the board in game two, scoring six runs across the first two innings. The early offensive surge was fueled by RBI singles from seniors Aidan Redahan and Brady Short, along with a two-run home run by senior Jackson Haker.

Stonehill responded quickly, trimming the deficit to three by the top of the fourth. Senior Taylor Gaspar launched a solo home run in the third, followed by a two-run shot from graduate student Jack Thorbahn in the fourth.

After CCSU added a run in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 7-3, Stonehill answered again in the fifth, scoring three runs to pull within one. The rally was sparked by consecutive run-scoring hits from McGee and Cohall.

The Skyhawks took their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh. An infield groundout by LeClair allowed Cohall to score the tying run, and Gaspar's fielder's choice brought Thorbahn home to give Stonehill an 8-7 advantage.

The lead was short-lived, as the Blue Devils responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to reclaim the lead, then added three more in the eighth to secure a 12-8 victory and a split of the doubleheader with Stonehill.
