  • Senior Anthony Divittorio added two doubles and two RBI of his own for the Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Coppin State wasted no time setting the tone in the series opener, jumping out to a 2-0 lead just three batters into the bottom of the first. After junior Gavin Grutzmacher worked a full-count walk to lead off the inning, Moore stepped up two batters later and launched a two-run homer over the right field wall.

Stonehill responded decisively, erupting for eight runs across the next two innings to take a commanding 8-2 lead into the bottom of the third. Sengenberger initiated the rally with an RBI double in the second, followed by a two-run double from LeClair. RBI singles from Zemotel and junior Sean McGee capped a five-run second inning for the Skyhawks.

Gaspar added to the offensive surge in the third with a towering three-run homer to left-center, scoring Thorbahn and Sengenberger, who had reached base earlier in the inning.

Undeterred, Coppin State chipped away at the deficit over the next three innings. The Eagles reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth, erupting for five runs. Key contributions included RBI singles from Moore and freshman Noah Hogan, three bases-loaded walks, and a fielder's choice that allowed Hogan to race home for Coppin State's 10th run and a 10-9 advantage.

Stonehill countered in the top of the seventh, retaking the lead with a pair of runs via a fielder's choice by Sengenberger and a throwing error by the Coppin State second baseman. The Eagles, however, answered once more in the bottom half of the inning. Junior Indy Anderson tied the game with an RBI single to right, and Hogan delivered a go-ahead sacrifice fly to left, pushing Coppin State back in front, 12-11.

Stonehill threatened in the eighth, placing the potential tying run just 90 feet away. But Ritz held firm on the mound, shutting the door to preserve Coppin State's narrow 12-11 victory in game one of the three-game set.
