LEXINGTON, Va. (February 28, 2026) – The Stonehill College baseball team split a doubleheader against Virginia Military Institute on Saturday afternoon. The Skyhawks dropped the opener, 3–0, to VMI before bouncing back in dominant fashion with a 16–5 victory in game two, which ended after eight innings. With the split, the Skyhawks moved to 1–9 overall, while VMI improved to 9–2 on the season.
GAME ONE: VMI 3 (9-1), Stonehill 0 (0-9)
How It Happened
VMI struck first in the bottom of the opening inning when Grayson Fitzwater worked a walk. Moments later, Bradley Garner stepped to the plate and launched a two-run homer over the right-center field wall, giving the Keydets an early 2–0 advantage.
Stonehill nearly answered in the following frame. A double down the left-field line off the bat of
Cam Morrison allowed
Nick Lundquist to round third and attempt to score the Skyhawks' first run of the afternoon. However, the junior catcher was thrown out at the plate by VMI, keeping Stonehill off the scoreboard.
After the early scoring chances, the contest settled into a tightly contested pitchers' duel, with neither side pushing across another run until the bottom of the eighth inning. There, VMI added an insurance run on a wild pitch from
Jake Lanzer to extend its lead.
Stonehill threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases. But Hunter Sipe shut the door on the rally, preserving the shutout as the Skyhawks fell, 3–0, in game one.

GAME TWO: Stonehill 16 (1-9), VMI 5 (9-2)
How It Happened

Will Newton ripped a double into the right-center gap. Morrison, continuing his standout afternoon at the plate, followed with a two-run single through the right side to score both runners and give Stonehill a 2–0 lead. VMI answered immediately, plating two runs in the bottom of the first to even the score at 2–2.
The Keydets grabbed their first lead in the third inning when Garner stole home as part of a double-steal attempt. This time, however, the Skyhawks responded swiftly. In the fourth,
Will Christopher launched a two-run homer to push Stonehill back in front, 4–3.
The back-and-forth battle continued as VMI surged ahead once more with a three-run fourth inning to take a 5–4 advantage.
The Skyhawks erupted for 12 unanswered runs over the next four innings to put the game out of reach and secure a commanding 16–5 victory in eight innings.
