How It Happened
Stonehill opened the scoring with three runs in the top of the first, fueled by four walks and a two-run single to right off the bat of Kearney. Maryland Eastern Shore responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to quickly tie the game. Following an RBI double into the left-field gap from McGee that scored junior
Cam Morrison, the Hawks came to the plate in the next frame and opened a commanding 11–4 lead, plating eight runs in the bottom of the second.
After the Skyhawks cut their deficit to three in the top of the third, UMES added two more runs in the bottom half of the inning to push the score to 13–8. Highlighting Stonehill's five-run third inning was a wild pitch that allowed Chin to race home, back-to-back RBI singles from McGee and senior
Michael Rickert, and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch drawn by LeClair.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Stonehill trimmed the deficit to 13-11 in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded, Kearney continued his standout performance, lacing a three-run double into the right-center field gap to bring the Skyhawks within two.
Over the next four half-innings—from the bottom of the sixth through the top of the eighth—Stonehill and UMES matched each other offensively, with four runs crossing the plate for each side, making it a 17–15 game heading into the ninth.
After turning an inning-ending double play in the bottom of the eighth, McGee led off the ninth by blasting a solo home run to cut the deficit to one. Rickert followed with a single and later advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Parks. A fielding miscue by the Hawks' third baseman allowed Rickert to race home with the game-tying run.
A wild pitch then allowed Newton to score from third, giving Stonehill its first lead since the second inning. Junior
Jamison Howland added insurance with a two-run home run to cap the Skyhawks' scoring before Basgaard closed the door in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 20–17 comeback victory for Stonehill.
