How It Happened
After three scoreless innings, Stonehill broke through in the top of the fourth to open the scoring. Parks reached on a Rams fielding error to lead off the frame and advanced to third one batter later when McGee lined a double into deep center field. Kearney followed with an infield single to plate Parks and move McGee to third, before a wild pitch from Will Creed allowed McGee to score and extend the Skyhawks' lead to 2-0.
Rhode Island responded immediately in the home half of the fourth, scoring five runs to take a 5-2 lead. Stonehill answered in the top of the fifth, trimming the deficit to two runs after the first three batters reached base via a walk or hit-by-pitch. Parks then grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Rickert to come around and score.
The Rams added to their advantage with a combined three runs in the sixth and seventh innings, stretching the lead to 8-3 heading into the eighth.
Stonehill began to chip away in the top of the eighth. Freshman
Tyler Redden was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position on a Parks single to right. After McGee reached on a fielder's choice and LeClair drew a walk to load the bases with one out, a Rhode Island fielding error on a ground ball by Kearney brought Redden home. Two batters later, Rickert delivered a clutch two-out, two-run double into the right-center gap to cut the deficit to 8-6.
Despite Meliere tossing a perfect bottom of the eighth and the Skyhawks putting the first two runners on in the ninth, Stonehill was unable to complete the comeback, falling 8-6.
