How It Happened
Stonehill wasted little time jumping out to an early lead, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning. A pair of two-run home runs off the bats of LeClair and Rickert within a four-batter span powered the Skyhawks to a 4-0 advantage. On the mound, Gilleran was sharp early, allowing just two hits while striking out four across his first three innings of work.
Mercyhurst broke through in the top of the fourth, erupting for six runs to take its first lead of the series. After a scoreless fifth, the Lakers threatened to add on in the sixth, loading the bases, but Cook and Florence combined to escape the jam and keep the deficit at two.
Stonehill answered in a big way in the bottom half of the inning, erupting for five runs to reclaim control. Rickert drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 6-6 before freshman
Kacin Robinson delivered a two-run single to give the Skyhawks the lead for good. Chin followed with an RBI single, and Robinson later scored on a fielder's choice to cap the rally and make it 10-6.
McGee added a solo home run in the seventh to extend the lead, but Mercyhurst responded with three runs in the eighth to pull within two. Lundquist provided an insurance run with a home run later in the inning, pushing the lead to three. From there, Basgaard shut the door in the ninth, securing the 12-9 victory for Stonehill.
