BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 8, 2026) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped its series-opening doubleheader to Long Island University Friday afternoon. The Skyhawks came up short in game one, 6-5, before the Sharks closed out the doubleheader sweep with a 5-2 win in game two.
GAME ONE: LIU 6 (23-18, 19-6 NEC), Stonehill 5 (19-24, 15-10 NEC)
How It Happened
LIU opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Elijah Fairchild. After the early tally, the two starters —
Jimmy Gilleran for Stonehill and Nicholas Finarelli for the Sharks — settled in on the mound and turned the opening innings into a pitcher's duel.
In the top of the fourth, the Skyhawks broke through to even the score at 1-1 when
Kacin Robinson lined an RBI single to score
Jamison Howland, who opened the frame with a full-count walk. LIU responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to reclaim a 3-1 advantage.
Following a sacrifice fly from
Armanis Romero in the sixth and an RBI knock from Ryan Rivera in the seventh, the teams entered the eighth inning separated by two runs.
Despite plating three runs in the top of the ninth to take their first lead of the opener, the Skyhawks surrendered a pair of runs in the bottom half as the Sharks walked off with a narrow 6-5 victory.
Inside the Box & Notes
- Gilleran struck out a season-high eight batters, while Jack Welsch delivered 1.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
- Howland and Nathan Kearney each recorded multi-hit performances, marking their 18th and 16th such games of the season, respectively.
- John Bureau extended his hitting streak to nine consecutive games, while Ryan LeClair pushed his on-base streak to 38 straight games.
- Robinson and Howland each recorded their eighth stolen base of the season.
GAME TWO: LIU 5 (24-18, 20-6 NEC), Stonehill 2 (19-25, 15-11 NEC)
How It Happened
LIU struck first again in game two, as Matthew McGurk launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning.
Stonehill responded quickly to trim the deficit when
Michael Rickert delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring
Tyler Redden, who reached earlier in the frame after being hit by a pitch.
LIU added three more runs across the fourth and fifth innings to build a 5-1 advantage heading into the sixth.
In the top half of the sixth, Stonehill cut into the lead again as Bureau drove an RBI single to bring home Kearney, who had reached on a single up the middle.
Despite pulling within three, the Skyhawks' offense was held in check the rest of the way, as LIU secured a 5-2 win to complete the sweep.
Inside the Box & Notes
- Bureau led the Skyhawks in game two, recording his first career three-hit performance, while Redden added his second career multi-hit game.
- LeClair and Kearney extended their on-base streaks to 39 and 36 consecutive games, respectively.
- Dan Lang earned the start on the mound, striking out two over 3.1 innings while allowing four runs on five hits.
- Jake Lanzer also recorded two strikeouts, while Adam Martin and Josh Florence combined for 3.0 scoreless innings of relief.
