Maza ninth-inning homer lifts Yellow Jackets to non-conference win

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 7, 2010) - Junior Paul Maza (Valencia, Venezuela) homered with two out in the top of the ninth inning to lift American International College to a 6-5 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference baseball action at Alfond Stadium on the campus of Rollins College today.

Maza finished 2-for-3 with the homer, two stolen bases, two runs scored and two RBI to lead American International. Junior Anthony Arrichiello (Yonkers, N.Y./Archbishop Stepanic) hit 2-for-4 with two RBI, while classmate Sean McClelland (Chicopee, Mass./Chicopee Comp) batted 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Junior righthander Sean Stevenson (Holyoke, Mass./Holyoke) went the distance on the mound to earn the win (1-0) for AIC, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Junior righthander Alex McCormick (Weymouth, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) took the loss, yielding two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks in three innings of relief. Senior Joe SantaBarbara (Danvers, Mass./Masconomet) tossed 3.1 near perfect innings of relief, allowing just a walk and no hits.

Sophomore Michael White added two hits, including a double, two steals and an RBI.

Sophomore Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) batted 2-for-4 with a double, two stolen bases, an RBI and run scored, while senior Ryan Healey (Lynn, Mass./Lynn English) was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

Stonehill took the early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H./Bow) reached on an error to lead off the inning, and then scored on a single through the right side by Bruno. Healey doubled the lead with an RBI single to left.

American International answered and took the lead with a four-run third. Senior Dan Bassani (Naples, Fla./Naples) drew a bases-loaded walk for the Yellow Jackets first run. Arrichiello followed with a two-run single to left to put AIC in front, before freshman Chris Amate (Hanover, Mass./Hanover) added another bases-loaded walk to plate the fourth run of the inning.

Stonehill knotted the score in the fourth when White delivered an RBI double down the rightfield line, and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Davis. AIC regained the lead in the seventh as McClelland led off with a single to left and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Maza. The Skyhawks tied the game up again in the eighth with a leadoff home run by Bruno down the leftfield line, before Maza struck for his winning homer in the ninth.

Stonehill (1-2, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader with Assumption College in Auburndale, Fla., starting at 9:30 a.m. American International (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) faces Rollins College later today at 2:30 p.m.
