ride four-run second to 5-2 win in game two to complete
sweep
MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 3,
2010) – Southern New Hampshire University swept a
doubleheader from Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference
softball action at Penmen Field on Saturday. The Penmen held the
Skyhawks to just two hits in a 4-1 win in game one, before using a
four-run second inning to fuel a 5-2 game two victory.
Freshman Kelsea Cheney
(Abington, Mass./Abington) led SNHU by hitting a combined
3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Senior
Melissa Pessotti (Burlington, Mass./Arlington
Catholic) was 3-for-6 with three doubles, and an RBI for
the afternoon for the Penmen.
Junior Kelsey Griffin
(Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) earned the win in the
circle in both games for SNHU, allowing two earned runs on six hits
in a combined 13.1 innings of work with seven strikeouts and a
walk.
Freshman Nicole Eisenmann
(East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) paced Stonehill
for the day by going a combined 2-for-5 with a double and RBI.

Southern New Hampshire held
Stonehill to just two hits and used a three-run fifth inning to key
a 4-1 triumph in game one.
Kelsea Chaney led SNHU as she
batted 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Kelsey
Griffin hit 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, while also
throwing 6.1 shutout innings for the win in the circle (3-3),
allowing just two hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Junior Melissa Vitagliano
(Bedford, Mass./Manchester West) was 1-for-2 with a home
run and two RBI for the Penmen, while Melissa Pessotti chipped in
by going 1-for-3 with a double.
Sophomore Kellie Reardon
(Burlington, Mass./Arlington Catholic) delivered a
pinch-hit RBI single for Stonehill in the seventh to break up the
shutout bid. Classmate Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin,
N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had the other Skyhawks hit,
finishing 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
Sophomore Samantha Krantz
(Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) took the loss in the
circle for Stonehill, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with
two strikeouts and three walks over 4.2 innings. Sophomore
Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) pitched 1.1
scoreless innings, working around two hits with three strikeouts
and no walks.
The game was scoreless until
Southern New Hampshire broke through with a run in the fourth.
Cheney drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a two-out double
down the leftfield line by Griffin. The Penmen plated three more in
the fifth. Cheney followed back-to-back doubles by freshman
Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) and Pessotti
with an RBI single, before Vitagliano belted a two-run home run to
chase Krantz.
Stonehill broke through with a run
in the seventh as Eisenmann led off with a walk and Reardon drove
in freshman Casey Remick (Norton, Mass./Norton),
who pinch-ran for Eisenmann, with a single up the middle. The game
ended when sophomore Sarah Stumper (St. James,
N.Y./Smithtown East), who drew a walk, was thrown out at
the plate on the play.

5, Stonehill 2 – Game 2

Southern New Hampshire scored four
in the second to erase a 2-0 deficit on its way to a 5-2 win in
game two.
Melissa Pessotti paced the offense
as she hit 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. Junior
Elena Anderson (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) was
1-for-3 with a double, RBI and run scored, while Kelsea Cheney
batted 1-for-3 with a double and RBI.
Kelsey Griffin earned the win (4-3)
again in the circle for the Penmen with a complete game effort,
allowing two earned runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a
walk over the seven innings.
Nicole Eisenmann hit 2-for-3 with a
double and RBI for Stonehill. Junior Katy Abarr (Richmond,
R.I./The Prout School) batted 1-for-3 with a run scored,
while Sarah Stumper finished 1-for-2 with a double and RBI.
Senior Kait Mendall
(Middleboro, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) took the loss
(3-2), allowing four runs, just one earned, on six hits and three
walks with no strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Kaitlin Andrews entered
again for the Skyhawks in relief, and yielded one earned run on two
hits with three strikeouts and no walks over 3.1 innings.
Stonehill struck first when
Eisenmann followed up a two-out walk by freshman Courtney
Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) with an RBI
double to right center. The Skyhawks doubled their lead in the
second when Abarr led off with a single and later scored on a
double to left by Stumper.
Southern New Hampshire took the
lead for good with a four-run second, taking advantage of two
Stonehill errors. After the first run scored on a throwing error,
Griffin tied the score by driving in a run on a ground out.
Anderson delivered an RBI double to give the Penmen the lead,
before scoring on double to left center by Pessotti.
SNHU tacked on an insurance run in
the fourth when Cristy Jenkins singled down the leftfield line with
one out and later scored on a double to right center by Cheney.
Stonehill (6-8-1, 1-3 NE-10) is
back in action on Monday with a makeup doubleheader against the
University of Massachusetts Lowell at Gartland Field starting at 3
p.m. Southern New Hampshire (6-8, 3-1 NE-10) hosts Bentley
University for an NE-10 doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m.
