Providence Defeats Stonehill, 8-1

Division I Friars sweep singles matches on way to win

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 6, 2011) – Providence College won all six singles matches without dropping a set to claim an 8-1 victory over Stonehill College, ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, in non-conference women's tennis action this afternoon.

Providence took two of three doubles matches, before reeling off the six singles wins to take control of the match. Junior Marisela Aviles-Duron (Tegucigalpa, Honduras), sophomore Maria Clara Barnardez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and freshmen Taylor Corder (Corinth, Miss./Keystone National Academy) and Karen Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) were all double-winners for the Friars, who didn't drop a set in singles play on the afternoon.

Aviles-Duron and Bernardez combined to post an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles before topping Stonehill senior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan), 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Bernardez added a 6-2, 6-2 victory over senior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) at No. 2 singles.

Ramirez and Corner teamed up for an 8-5 decision over Toegemann and senior Bacall Brooks (York, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas). Ramirez also picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, while Corner won at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) and freshman Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Mass./Mount Saint Charles Academy) combined to notch a point for Stonehill with an 8-5 triumph at No. 3 doubles over Providence freshmen Taylor Ahlborn (Minneapolis, Minn./ Benilde St. Margaret's School) and Caitlyn Foley (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame Academy).

Stonehill (3-1, 3-0 NE-10) closes out its fall season when it hosts Le Moyne College for a Northeast-10 Conference match on Sunday, October 16, at 10 a.m. Providence (3-0, 0-0 Big East) participates in the Marist College Invitational this weekend.
