Stonehill Takes Down Adelphi, 6-3

Skyhawks rebound from first NE-10 defeat to take key conference match

Amy Toegemann led the Skyhawks in singles play with a win at No. 2.

EASTON, Mass. (April 10, 2011) – Stonehill College, currently ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional poll, claimed a key Northeast-10 Conference match with a 6-3 decision over sixth-ranked Adelphi University this afternoon at home.

Stonehill won two of three doubles matches for a strong start against an Adelphi squad which entered today ranked just behind the Skyhawks in third place in the NE-10 standings. Junior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) rebounded from just their second doubles defeat of the season Friday with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 this afternoon to notch their 20th overall win, and junior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and sophomore Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) cruised to their sixth straight win 8-1 at No. 3. At No. 1 doubles, senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and sophomore Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) fell 8-6 to Adelphi’s Maria Toft and Alda Ribeiro in a matchup of regionally-ranked teams, Herchel and Harrow ranked 10th and Toft and Ribeiro 7th.

Toft and Ribeiro accounted for all three of the Panthers’ victories, as regional #4 Toft defeated Herchel at first singles and Ribeiro won over White in the third slot, but Stonehill claimed the rest of the singles slate to improve to 9-1 in the NE-10. Toegemann rolled past Carolyn Smith 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, Martin was a straight-sets winner at No. 5, and sophomore Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and junior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) both fought for three-set victories to put Stonehill over the top.

Stonehill (13-2, 9-1 NE-10) wraps up the regular-season home schedule on Tuesday when the Skyhawks host Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m.
