Stonehill Defeats Holy Cross, 8-1

Senior Amy Toegemann led the double-winners for Stonehill with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Toegemann leads double-winners for Skyhawks in first home match of spring semester

EASTON, Mass. (March 20, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the ITA East Regional rankings, picked up a comfortable 8-1 victory over Division I College of the Holy Cross in non-conference women's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Senior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) led three double-winners for Stonehill as it posted its second-straight win in its first home match of the spring semester. She teamed up with sophomore Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles and then won a back and forth 7-5, 4-6, 10-4 decision over Holy Cross freshman Taylor Stathis (Rockaway Beach, N.Y./Dominican Academy) at No. 1 singles.

Senior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) and junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) both also posted a pair of victories on the afternoon, beginning with a tight 8-6 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Frost then collected a 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Holy Cross senior Carolyn Chandley (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter-Marian), while Hickey coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over sophomore Maya Welch (Rye, N.Y./Ursuline) at No. 5.

Junior Jennifer Denyes (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephens Episcopal) and freshman Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) also notched singles wins for Stonehill at No. 2 and 6, respectively.

Senior Emily Marr (Jefferson, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) posted the lone Holy Cross win with a 2-6, 6-3, 10-8 comeback victory over Stonehill freshman Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) at No. 3 singles.

Stonehill (6-3, 4-0 NE-10) returns to Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday when it visits American International College at noon. The Skyhawks return home on Sunday to host Assumption College at 11 a.m. Holy Cross (8-2) participates in the Wheaton Doubles Invitational on Sunday at 10 a.m.
