Toegemann leads Skyhawks to fourth straight victory
EASTON, Mass. (March 28, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the ITA East Regional rankings, remained perfect in Conference play with an 8-1 victory over rival Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.
Seniors Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) and junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) were all double-winners to lead Stonehill to its fifth-straight win. Frost and Hickey sparked a 3-0 sweep in doubles play for the Skyhawks as they combined to post an 8-3 victory at No. 1. Frost then added a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Bentley senior Brittany Harbert (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) at No. 4 singles, while Hickey cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win over freshman Melanie Scott (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) at No. 5 singles. Hickey improves to 29-0 over her career in NE-10 matches with the victory.
Toegemann breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Bentley junior Paulina Sotomayor (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) after combining with sophomore Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) for a 9-7 decision at No. 3 doubles. Junior Jennifer Denyes (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal) and freshman Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) also collected singles wins for the Skyhawks at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively.
Junior Rachael Litton (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) held off Stonehill freshman Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 3 singles to notch the lone point of the match for Bentley.
Stonehill (9-3, 7-0 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts College of Saint Rose for an NE-10 dual match at 3 p.m. Bentley (4-8, 4-1 NE-10) hosts Saint Michael's College on Saturday at noon.
