NEW HAVEN, Conn. (March 15, 2013) – The Stonehill College softball team lost a pair of games to the Southern Connecticut State University Owls 5-2 and 7-0 at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.
SCSU 5, Stonehill 2
Whtley drives in two to help SCSU take game one over Stonehill.
Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) went 1-for-4 and knocked in two RBIs to lead the way for SCSU in game one. Sophomore Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn./Darien) chipped in with two hits and an RBI of her own.
Freshman Megan Staudle (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) launched her fourth home run of the season for Stonehill. Junior Lindsay McKillop (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) also recorded an RBI for the Skyhawks, going 1-for-2 in the game.
Sophomore Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va./Stonewall Jackson) pitched a complete game and earned the victory for SCSU. Cockrill gave up two earned runs on seven hits and four walks, while striking out three.
Megan Ruonavaara (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) took the loss for Stonehill. The freshman pitcher went five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and four walks. Senior Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater,Mass./East Bridgewater) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Skyhawks, giving up two hits while striking out one.
The Skyhawks jumped on the board to take a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Staudle led off with a home run to left center field. It was Staudle's fourth home run of the season and sixth RBI of the year.
The Owls stormed back to take a 3-1 lead in the third. With the bases loaded and one out, Whitley hit a two-RBI single to left field. The next batter, Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif./Washington High) registered another RBI single to give the Owls a 3-1 advantage.
SCSU added two more in the bottom of the fourth inning. With a runner on second, Buch made it 4-1 when she roped an RBI double to left field. Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) gave the Owls a four-run lead when she hit an RBI double of her own.
Stonehill would get one back in the sixth. After Eisenmann doubled to left field, McKillop knocked her in with a sacrifice fly. Cockrill would not be denied though, closing down Stonehill in the seventh inning o preserve the victory.

Hoffman launches two-run home run as the Owls completed the sweep with a game two victory.
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn./Amity) went 2-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs to lead the way for the Owls in game two. Muscarella went 2-for-3 and also recorded two RBIs for SCSU.
Junior Angela Moskwa (West Suffield, Conn/Suffield) went 1-for-2 and posted Stonehill's lone RBI in game two. Freshmen Cayleigh McCarthy (Norfolk, Mass./King Phillip) and Alison Sumski (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) also registered hits for Stonehill, who mustered just five hits in the night-cap.
Freshman Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) pitched a complete game and captured the victory for SCSU in game two. Van Alphen held the Skyhawks to just one run on five hits and two walks. The freshman struck-out nine Skyhawks on her way to victory.
Lauren Esposito (Middlefield, Conn./Coginchaug) was saddled with the loss for Stonehill. Esposito gave up six runs on 11 hits and three walks in 3.2 innings of work. Eisenmann pitched 2.1 more innings of relief in the second game, giving up one run on four hits.
The Owls took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. With runners on first and second, Muscarella shot a single up the middle to put the Owls on the board. The next batter, Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I./Coventry), drove in a run when she grounded out to the shortstop. Muscarella then scored on a wild pitch to put the Owls up by three.
SCSU added three more in the fourth. With a runner on second, Hoffman launched her first home run of the season to give the Owls a five run lead. Buch added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 6-0.
After SCSU grabbed a run in the bottom of the sixth, The Skyhawks looked to get something in the seventh. With one out, McCarthy doubled to left field, making way for Moskwa. Moskwa roped a single to center field to record her first RBI of the season. The Skyhawks wouldn't get any closer, as Van Alphen closed the door for the Owls.
Next up for Stonehill (4-10, 0-2 NE-10) is a matchup with Bloomfield College Saturday afternoon at 12:00 pm in Bloomfield, N.J. Southern Connecticut State (5-5, 2-0 NE-10) returns to action Saturday at 1:00 pm for a conference meeting with Southern New Hampshire.
