Baseball Takes Second Game, 7-1, Splits Doubleheader with Bentley

EASTON, Massachusetts (May 7, 2021) – The Stonehill College baseball team (16-13, 11-11 NE10) split with Bentley University (15-9, 14-8 NE10) in the first of two doubleheaders in the final regular season series with scores of 5-6 in 10 innings and 7-1 in seven innings at DeFelice Field Friday afternoon.

Game 1: Stonehill 5 – Bentley 6 (10 innings)

Standout Performers:  


Herrick went 3-for-6 in the doubleheader with a team-high 3 RBI 

Key Moments:

Stonehill got out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first. With two outs and runners on first and second, Herrick doubled to left center scoring Lucier and John Orzechowski, 2-0. Farragher then singled to left field to drive home Ciulla-Hall for the third run of the game, 3-0. Bentley responded with just one run in the bottom of the frame as Ryan Berardino flew out to center field and Tim Zupkus crossed home to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.

In the top of the third, Herrick put across another run driving the ball up the middle, scoring Blaine Lidsky from third, 4-1. One inning later in the bottom of the fourth, the Falcons scored three runs to tie the game, 4-4, on three hits and one error.

The Skyhawks' Ciulla-Hall gave Stonehill their second lead of the day, 5-4, on an RBI single to left field. In the bottom of the eighth, Zupkus tied the game with his first RBI single, 5-5. The Falcons saw just two base runners in the bottom of the 10th, and with two outs, Steve Rizzuto walked off with a single to center field, 6-5.

Game 2: Stonehill 7 – Bentley 1

Standout Performers: 

Key Moments:

After retiring nine-straight batters through the fourth inning, Stonehill broke open the game with five runs on two hits and an error, 5-0. With one out and the bases loaded, Mike Maher and Kiely each drove home a run for a 2-0 advantage. On an error in the outfield, Orzechowski reached safely and scored Swanholm, 3-0, as two more runs made the score, 5-0.

Bentley saw Cory Bright cross home on Zupkus' sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth, 5-1, and the Skyhawks weren't done as they added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on three hits, 7-1. After Swanholm bunted Farragher over to second, Maher tripled to right field and Kiely singled through the left side for back-to-back RBI. The Skyhawks retired the bottom of the seventh, as Zupkus was the only base runner with a two-out walk, as Stonehill held on for the win, 7-1.
