Hernangomez leads Stags with 20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, five steals
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (November 18, 2022) – Fairfield University opened its new on-campus arena with a 77-53 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference women's basketball matchup inside the Leo D. Mahoney Arena tonight.
Postgrad Andrea Hernangomez led Fairfield as it christened its new home with a game-high 20 points, including 17 in the second half, seven rebounds, seven assists and five steals. She was the lone double-figure scorer in the game for either team as she made 7-of-9 shots from the floor, including 3-for-4 from three-point distance.
Three Stonehill players finished with seven points, including fifth-year Sophie Glidden with seven points, four assists and a blocked shot.

How it Happened
- Fairfield outscored Stonehill 48-28 in the second half, including 28-14 in the fourth quarter to pull away.
- Fairfield scored the first four points in its new arena on layups from Cavanaugh and sophomore Lauren Beach to grab a quick lead.
- Stonehill's first four came from junior Cameron Ward to knot the score, but Fairfield used an 11-3 run to open an eight-point lead (15-7) after a Cavanaugh layup with 1:42 to play in the first quarter.
- Loder and freshman Chelsea Graiver scored the last four points of the frame to pull Stonehill back within four (15-11), but the Stags grabbed a nine-point lead (23-14) two and half minutes into the second after a layup by junior Mimi Rubino.
- The Fairfield lead grew to 11 (26-16) after a Brown steal and layup midway through the second, but Stonehill closed the half with a 9-2 spurt, sparked by a three-pointer and layup from sophomore Maureen Stapleton, to draw back within four (29-25) at the break.
- The Skyhawks pulled within three (31-28) after a Jada Thornton three-pointer two minutes into the third and were still within four (36-32) after she added a floater with six minutes to go.
- Fairfield was able to extend its lead to ten (49-39) after three quarters and then opened the fourth with an 18-2 run to break game open and grab a 26-point cushion (69-43) after a layup by junior MacKenzie Daleba with three minutes to play.
Noteworthy
- Hernangomez scored 13 of her 17 second half points in the third quarter.
- Thornton finished with a season-high seven points.
- Ward's six points are a career-best, while Graiver scored the first six points of her career.
- Stonehill shot a season-best 48.9-percent from the floor, but turned the ball over a season-high 26 times, resulting in a 35-11 Fairfield advantage in points off.
- The Skyhawks also won the rebounding battle, 34-22.
- Ten of the 11 Stonehill players scored in the game.
