Volleyball Concludes Eagle Challenge, Falls 3-1 to Queens (N.C.)

MOREHEAD, Ky. (August 26, 2023)- The Stonehill College women's volleyball team competed in the final match of the Morehead State Eagle Challenge Saturday afternoon with a match against Queens University (N.C.), dropping the match in four sets, 3-1 (15-25, 23-25, 25-19, 19-25).

In Saturday's lone match, Stonehill freshman Lauren MacKellar topped the box score with 11 kills to lead the Skyhawks. Senior Lauren McCloskey notched nine kills, three digs, and three blocks. Freshman Georgia Murphy tallied 16 digs to lead the team while adding eight kills of her own. Senior Kristen DeLorenzo followed close behind with 13 digs and contributed seven assists as well. Sophomore Delaney Mihelich led the team in the assist category, posting 18 while freshman Amaya Parnell dished out 14 helpers with 10 digs in the match. Sophomore Mia Berardino added six kills and seven digs as well as three service aces to lead Stonehill.

SET 1 | Queens got off to a fast start in the opening frame, scoring the first two points before Stonehill would even things up at seven points each, before taking a two-point lead of their own (9-7). The teams would be knotted up at 10-10 before four straight points from the Royals gave them the lead, eventually scoring eight of the next ten points (18-12). Queens never let up, closing out the first set 25-15, tallying six of the final eight points.

SET 2 | The Skyhawks and Royals traded scores early in the second set (7-7) before Queens notched a three-point advantage (12-9). Stonehill scored six of their next seven points from kills with two coming from both Murphy and MacKellar to bring the Skyhawks back to even (14-14). The Royal would go on another run to pull ahead by four points (20-16). Stonehill once again climbed back into the set, coming within one point (24-23) but narrowly losing the final point to Queens, 25-23.

SET 3 | The Skyhawks started the third set on fire, jumping out to a 7-1 lead on the heels of an ace and a kill from Parnell. After a 6-0 run, the Royals tied the score (7-7) before taking the lead a few points later (9-8). Queens pushed their lead to two (12-10) but four assists from Mihelich and two points from both MacKellar and Berardino catapulted the Skyhawks back in front (18-15). The Royals were able to trim the deficit to two (21-19) but Stonehill closed out the set with four straight points, winning their first frame of the season, 25-19.

SET 4 | Stonehill had a strong start to the fourth set, building a 6-3 lead early with McCloskey accounting for three points on two kills and a block. Queens tied it up at 6-6 before a 4-0 run for the Skyhawks gave them the lead (10-6). Stonehill held on to their lead as the teams exchanged scores (14-11) but five straight points from the Royals put them up 16-14. They'd extend their lead to five points (20-15) before the Skyhawks would go on a 4-0 stretch to trim the deficit to just one (20-19). The next five points would go to Queens to as the Royals closed out the match with a 25-19 win as Stonehill wrapped up their weekend at the Eagle Challenge in Morehead, Ky.

The Skyhawks return to Merkert Gymnasium for their home opener on Wednesday, August 30 at 7 p.m. when they host the Bryant Bulldogs for a non-conference match.
