EASTON, Mass. (May 27, 2025) – After 28 seasons leading the Stonehill College baseball program, Head Coach
Pat Boen '89 has announced his retirement. A pillar of Skyhawk athletics for nearly three decades, Boen leaves a legacy marked by sustained excellence, historic milestones, and an unwavering commitment to the development of his student athletes both on and off the field.
"Words alone can't properly express how much Pat has meant not only to the baseball program, but to our department and the entire College community during his time as our head coach," said Director of Athletics
Dean O'Keefe. "His many significant contributions, and the impact he has made in the lives of hundreds of student-athletes, will last long after his coaching career is complete. Pat is synonymous with Stonehill, and we are fortunate to have had his leadership as he guided our baseball program to new heights, and he leaves behind a rock-solid foundation that will allow Stonehill baseball to continue to do great things in the future. We are grateful for all Pat has done for Stonehill, and wish him the very best"
Boen took over the baseball program in 1998 and quickly established Stonehill as a competitive force in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE10) at the Division II level. The Skyhawks achieved numerous program milestones including 13 NE10 postseason appearances, three NCAA Tournament berths, and three NE10 Championship titles.
Boen also guided the program through its transition to NCAA Division I, competing in the Northeast Conference (NEC). Over the first three years of this transition, Boen led the Skyhawks to 52 Division I wins, bringing his overall coaching record to 666-588-4—the most wins and games coached in Stonehill baseball history. Most recently, he helmed the team to their inaugural NEC postseason appearance in just the third year at the Division I level.
During his remarkable tenure, Coach Boen led Stonehill to 20 seasons with 20 or more victories, including six campaigns with 30 or more wins. His 2000 and 2015 teams each tied the program record with 34 wins—milestone seasons in Stonehill history. The 2000 squad captured the Northeast-10 (NE10) Championship and secured the program's first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In 2015, Boen guided the team to its first-ever at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament. The 2010 team also added to Boen's legacy by winning the program's third NE10 title and earning an automatic NCAA Tournament berth, where the Skyhawks went on to win two NCAA Regional games.
"Coaching at my alma mater for the past 28 years has been one of the greatest blessings of my life," noted Boen. "Stonehill is home, and the relationships I've built with our student-athletes and their families have meant the world to me. I'll always be grateful for the memories, the support, and incredible people who have made this journey so special."
Over the course of his career, Boen mentored a long list of standout student-athletes, including numerous All-Conference selections, NE10 Players and Pitchers of the Year, multiple All-Americans, and an NEC Rookie of the Year. His leadership was instrumental in the development of players who advanced to the professional level, including two MLB Draft picks and several others who signed professional contracts.
Boen, a native of Brockton, Massachusetts, and a 2007 inductee into the Stonehill Hall of Fame, was a standout shortstop for the Skyhawks from 1986 to 1989. In addition to his baseball accomplishments, he was the starting point guard for the men's basketball team, helping lead Stonehill to the 1988–89 Northeast-10 Championship.
He joined Stonehill following an exceptional athletic career at nearby Brockton High School, where he guided the Boxers to a state basketball championship as a senior in 1985. He was later inducted into the Brockton High School Hall of Fame in recognition of his achievements.
A national search for the next head coach of the Stonehill baseball program will begin immediately. Associate Head Coach
Sean Callahan will serve as Interim Head Coach during the transition.
Boen will continue his tenure at Stonehill College in a new capacity, serving as a Philanthropy Officer in the College's Office of Advancement.
