Boxscore
Foxboro, Mass. - The Skyhawks got up 4-3
on the defending ECAC Northeast Champions but couldn't hold on as
the Curry Colonels scored once in the third and again in overtime
to beat Stonehill 5-4 on Tuesday evening at the Foxboro Sports
Center.
Curry wasted little time getting on the board in the first, as
Curry freshman John Williams fired a wrist shot over the shoulder
of Mike Manna (Framingham, Mass.) less than four
minutes into the period for the one goal lead.
The Colonels added to their lead three minutes later on a power
play goal by James Pentecost.
Stonehill wouldn't go quietly, as Ryan MacInnis
(Simsbury, Conn.) fired a wrist shot that went off the glove of
Curry goaltender Steven Jackiel before hitting the back of the net
to cut the Colonel lead in half with just five minutes left
in the half.
In the second period, Pentecost scored his second goal of the
game on a wrist shot, but the Skyhawks fought back once again.
Stonehill rallied behind goals from freshman Andrew
Diozzi (Norwich, Conn.) and James
Florentino (West Roxbury, Mass.) to tie the game up at
three with just under six minutes remaining in the period.
The Skyhawks continued to pressure Curry and finally took the
lead on a five on three with 58 seconds left on a Florentino slap
shot from the left side of the ice that was assisted by
Reissfelder.
Five minutes into the third, the Colonels knotted it up at four,
when Sean Sylvester's slap shot slipped under Manna's pads.
Curry continued to pressure the Stonehill but came away
empty.
Bredan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) had a chance
to end the game with seconds left put wasn't able to convert,
though the Skyhawks did draw a penalty going into overtime.
Despite a five on three for the first 30 seconds, Stonehill was
unable to convert. It would come back to haunt them as Curry broke
through for the game winner on a scrum right in front of the net
2:28 into the extra session.
Manna made an impressive 46 saves in the losing effort, while
Jackiel had 34 stops.
Coach Garry Hebert was impressed with his team despite the loss,
"I'm proud of our effort and that we continue to improve and not
get discouraged. We're an extremely resiliant group and we're
not done yet."
With the win Curry improves to 6-1 while the Skyhawks drop to
0-5. Stonehill returns to action on Thursday when they travel
to take on Johnson and Wales at 6:50 p.m.
