Foxboro, Mass. - A two goal
third period wasn't enough as Stonehill dropped their seventh
straight, a 4-3 loss to conference foe Southern New Hampshire on
Saturday afternoon.
The Skyhawks came out firing in the first, taking multiple shots
on goal before the Penman even got off a shot on freshman
goaltender Derek Chapdelaine (Granby,
Mass.). However it was Southern New Hampshire that struck
first on a Mark Smith shot 5:38 into the period.
The Penman upped their lead to 2-0 on a wrister by Brandon
Sheehan with 13 minutes remaining in the period, though two
Southern New Hampshire penalties gave the Skyhawks a five on three
with two and a half minutes remaining.
Stonehill capitalized on the power play, with John
Sommers (Manchester, Conn,) putting home the rebound of a
Paul Reissfelder (Plymouth, Mass.) shot with just
under two minutes remaining and went into the second down by just
one.
Five minutes into the period the Penman brought their lead back
to two as Jake Berube fired a shot that went under Chapdelaine's
pads into the net.
Southern New Hampshire extended their lead with just under a
minute remaining in the period and went into the third with a 4-1
lead over Stonehill.
After just four second period shots the Skyhawks came out
aggressive in the final period and were rewarded at the 6:27 mark
when Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) fired a
pass from behind the net to Bill Ninteau
(Litchfield, N.H.) who put a slap shot past goalie Todd
Rowley.
Stonehill got within one two and a half minutes later when
freshman Bill Harris (Weymouth, Mass.) scored on a
rebound right in front of the net to put the Skyhawks down by
one. However in the final minute, Stonehill was unable to
score even after pulling their goaltender.
Derek Chapdelaine made 29 saves in net but with the loss the
Skyhawks drop to 0-7 on the season. Coach Garry Hebert had mixed
feelings about the game.
"We stormed them in the third, but in the first two periods we
looked fatigued. If we can put three periods together well be
a force to be reckoned with.
Stonehill returns to action on Tuesday when they take on the
Assumption Greyhounds at 7 p.m. at the Foxboro Sports Center.
