Stonehill Tops Johnson & Wales 4-2 in Season Opener

Jackson is solid in net to support an early Skyhawks lead

Tyler Jackson made 30 saves to notch the victory in the season opener.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (November 2, 2010) – Stonehill College kicked off the 2010-11 season with a 4-2 victory over host Johnson & Wales University in non-conference men’s ice hockey action on Tuesday night.

Junior forward Bill Harris (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) led the Skyhawks with two points on a goal and an assist, and senior John Yokow (Windsor, Conn./Northwest Catholic) and sophomores J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass./Milton) and Tyler Beauregard (Essex Junction, Vt./Tilton School) each added a goal. Junior goaltender Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made 30 saves in the Stonehill net.

Johnson & Wales got goals from freshman Ryan Martin (Toronto, Ontario/Upper Canada Patriots) and junior Joe Simeone (Cranston, R.I./Northern Cyclones), and 30 saves from sophomore netminder Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio/Queen City Steam).

The Skyhawks jumped out to an early lead in the first period, as Sabin put away the first goal just 2:27 into the game and Yokow potted a second from senior Angelo Todesca (Westwood, Mass./Catholic Memorial) less than five minutes later. Beauregard added a power-play tally at 8:36, with assists from Harris and sophomore George DeMello (Cotuit, Mass./Tabor Academy), to open up a 3-0 lead for Stonehill.

Martin converted a power play at 10:36 to put one on the board for the Wildcats, but it was the last successful power play Johnson & Wales would see as Stonehill went 4 for 5 on the penalty kill.

Jackson made 11 saves to hold the Wildcats scoreless in the second period, and Harris scored an insurance goal on the power play at 7:47 from sophomore Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy) and senior Eric Scholl (Wilmington, Mass./Tilton School). Johnson & Wales came back in the third period when Simeone put an unassisted tally past Jackson to make it 4-2, but Jackson stopped seven shots in the final frame to stifle the rally.

Stonehill (1-0) next visits Becker College for the opening round of the Becker Ice Breaker Tournament on Friday at 6 p.m.
