WINTER PARK, Fla. (March
11, 2010) – Bentley University reversed
yesterday's score line with a 7-6 victory over Stonehill
College in non-conference baseball action at Alfond Stadium on the
campus of Rollins College today. Stonehill has its second game of
the afternoon against American International College cancelled due
to inclement weather.
Junior James Roche
(Arlington, Mass./Arlington) led Bentley by going 3-for-5
with a home run, two runs scored and two RBI, scoring the winning
run in the bottom of the ninth on an error by the Stonehill
rightfielder after sophomore Mark Lane (Tyngsboro,
Mass./Tyngsboro) reached on a single on the play. Lane
finished 2-for-5 with a double and run scored. Junior Ross
Curley (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) hit 2-for-4 with a run
scored, while senior Charlie Pagliarulo (Medford,
Mass./Medford) chipped in by hitting 1-for-3 with a home
run and two RBI.
Junior Angelo Bruno
(Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) led Stonehill by batting 3-for-5
with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Rich McHugh
(Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) hit 2-for-4 with a pair
of doubles and two RBI, while junior Brendan Shepard
(Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) was 2-for-4 with a double and
two runs scored. Seniors Mitch Davis (Bow,
N.H./Bow) and Shane Franz (Cazenovia,
N.Y./Cazenovia) both chipped in with two hits, including a
double.
Senior Dean Sandonato
(Quincy, Mass./BC High) picked up the win (1-0) in relief
for Bentley, scattering three hits and two walks over four
scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Sophomore Dan Murphy
(Garden City, N.Y./Chaminade) started for the Falcons and
allowed six earned runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts and no
walks in five-plus innings.
Junior Dan Corrigan
(Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) was pinned with the loss,
yielding the one unearned run on four hits in two-plus innings of
relief. Sophomore Eric Haughn (Pembroke,
Mass./Pembroke) pitched the first five for the Skyhawks,
surrendering six earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and a
walk.
Roche led off the decisive ninth
with an infield single, and then advanced to second with a single
to center by junior Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop
Hendricken). Lane followed with a single to right, that
was bobbled by Franz, who hit a game-winning home run in
yesterday's win over the Falcons, allowing Roche to come home
with the winning run.
Stonehill took a 2-0 lead after an
inning and a half with an RBI single by Bruno in the first and a
run-scoring double from McHugh in the second. Bentley answered with
three in the home half of the second, capped by a two-out two-run
home run to left by Pagliarulo.
Stonehill regained the lead with a
pair of runs in the fifth on Bruno's second home run of the
year, a two-run shot to left with two out. Bentley struck right
back with three in the bottom of the fifth, keyed by a two-run
blast by Roche, his fifth of the year. The Skyhawks knotted the
score at 6-6 with a two-run sixth. Sophomore Michael White
(Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) collected an RBI single
before McHugh laced an RBI double down the leftfield line.
Stonehill (2-5, 0-0 NE-10) is back
in action tomorrow for a non-conference doubleheader with
Assumption College starting at 3 p.m. Bentley (5-10) faces American
International tomorrow at noon.
