Skyhawks drop season-opener
as six-run fifth fuels Tars victory

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 5,
2010) - Stonehill College dropped its season-opener with a
12-1 setback at Rollins College in non-conference baseball action
at Alfond Stadium tonight.
Sophomore Keith Mager
(Middletown, N.J./Middletown North) paced the Rollins
offense as he hit 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four runs
scored. Senior Ryan Luker (Saint Petersburg,
Fla./Clearwater) was 3-for-5 with a triple and three RBI,
while classmate Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass./St.
John's) drove in three runs as part of a 2-for-5 night at
the plate with a triple and run scored. Senior Ben Hewitt
(Framingham, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) chipped in with
two doubles, an RBI and two runs scored.
Senior Stephen Hiscock
(Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) earned the win (3-1) on the
mound, allowing the one earned run on six hits with eight
strikeouts and three walks over six innings of work for Rollins.
Sophomore lefthander Matt Olsen (Winchester,
Mass./Winchester) suffered the loss (0-1) for Stonehill,
yielding seven runs, six earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts
and a walk five innings of work.
Senior Rob Von Stein
(Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) led the Stonehill offense as he
hit 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Mitch Davis (Bow,
N.H./Bow) was 1-for-4 with a double, while classmate
Matt Skane (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) finished
1-for-4 with a run scored.
Rollins broke a 1-1 tie in the
bottom of the fifth, doing all its damage with two outs. Ferguson
sparked the inning with a two-run triple, coming around to score on
an error on the play. Luker followed three batters later with
another two-run triple. He later scored on a dropped pop up to
third.
Rollins opened the scoring with a
run in the second when Mager led off with a single, reached second
on a balk and scored on a single to right center by Luker.
Stonehill evened things in the fourth when Skane singled with one
out and scored on a Von Stein single to left with two out.
Rollins put the game away with four
runs in the seventh as Mager and Hewitt each collected RBI double,
before adding a single run in the eighth.
