Stonehill Bounces Back at
Assumption, 8-1
WORCESTER, Mass. (April 1,
2010) – Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the most
recent ITA East Regional rankings, rebounded from its first
Northeast-10 Conference loss in almost two years with an 8-1
victory over Assumption College in NE-10 men's tennis action
this afternoon.
Senior Michael Mashkevich
(Goleta, Calif./Framingham (Mass.)) and junior Tim
Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) led the
double-winners for Stonehill, who built off a 2-1 advantage
following doubles play by not dropping a set in sweeping all six
singles matches to sew up the win. The All-NE-10 doubles pairing
cruised to an 8-1 win at first doubles for the Skyhawks, while
Fayed, the reigning NE-10 Player of the year, posted a 6-4, 6-2 win
at first singles and Mashkevich picked up a 6-2, 6-1 decision at
second singles.
Sophomore Aaron Bergeron
(Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and freshman Chris Martin
(Darien, Conn./Darien) were also double-winners for
Stonehill as neither dropped a game in coasting to 6-0, 6-0 wins
and sixth and fifth singles, respectively. The duo also combined
for an 8-6 decision at third doubles.
Freshmen Matt Drolet
(Cumberland, R.I./Mount Saint Charles) and Dylan
Baker (Cherry Valley, Mass./Leicester) combined to notch
Assumption's lone point of the match with a 9-7 victory at
second doubles.
Stonehill (7-5, 4-1 NE-10) is off
until next Thursday when it visits Bentley University for a key
NE-10 match at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks next home match is Sunday,
April 11, against Adelphi University at noon. Assumption (0-7, 0-6
NE-10) visits Southern New Hampshire University next Wednesday at 5
p.m.
