Stonehill Shuts Out Adelphi, 9-0
EASTON, Mass. (April 11, 2010) –
Stonehill College, ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II East
Regional rankings, swept a key matchup with Adelphi University,
ranked tenth in the ITA East Regional rankings, in Northeast-10
Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts
this afternoon.
Stonehill swept the three doubles matched and then clinched the
win behind singles victories from senior Michael Mashkevich
(Goleta, Calif./Framingham (Mass.)) and second singles and
junior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury),
the reigning NE-10 Player of the Year at first singles. The duo
also combined for an 8-1 triumph at first doubles to set the tone
for the Skyhawks doubles sweep.
Senior Mike Leone (Cataumet, Mass./Bourne) and
sophomore Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South
Kingstown) both picked up three-set victories in singles
play after teaming up for an 8-5 win at second doubles. Leone
rallied for a 5-7, 6-3, 10-3 victory over Adelphi freshman
Adrish Tewarie (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and
third singles. Burke held off Adelphi junior Joseph Carbone
(North Babylon, N.Y./St. John's the Baptist) for a
6-4, 5-7, 10-7 win at fourth singles. Freshman Chris Martin
(Darien, Conn./Darien) also rallied in three sets, posting
a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win at fifth singles.
Stonehill (9-6, 6-2 NE-10) returns to action on Thursday when it
hosts American International College on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Adelphi (5-3, 5-2 NE-10) hosts American International on Tuesday at
3 p.m.
