Stonehill Notches Key Win Over Adelphi,
6-3
EASTON, Mass. (April 11, 2010) –
Stonehill College, ranked fifth in this week's NCAA Division
II East Regional rankings, held on for a key victory over Adelphi
University, ranked fourth in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference
women's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this
afternoon.
After sweeping the three doubles matches, Stonehill held off a
rally in singles play to clinch the victory. Sophomore
Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) and freshman
Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) led the
Skyhawks to the win as double-winners on the afternoon. Hickey
clinched the team win with her 6-4, 6-0 win over Adelphi senior
Amanda Aniboli (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) at
fourth singles, improving to 30-0 over her collegiate career in
singles play. She and Haedrich combined for an 8-2 win at third
doubles. Haedrich posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at sixth singles.
Junior Alda Ribeiro (Del Ray Beach, Fla./Spanish
River) and freshmen Maria Toft (Copenhagen,
Denmark) and Michelle Gurda (Greenville,
N.Y./Minisink) evened the dual match at 3-3 after
combining to sweep the top three singles spots. Gurda held off
Stonehill sophomore Lindsay Simmons (Wethersfield,
Conn./Wethersfield) for a 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 win at third
singles.
Freshman Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy
Spirit) put Stonehill back in front with a 6-2, 6-0 win at
fifth singles over Adelphi junior Jamie Sussman
(Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury). Hickey then clinched the
win with her straight sets victory.
Stonehill (12-2, 9-1 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it
visits Merrimack College for a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at
3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home for its final regular season
home match of the year against Saint Anselm College on Friday at 3
p.m.
