#2 Stonehill Advances Past #3 Adelphi, 5-2
Skyhawks to battle
top-seeded Southern New Hampshire for second-straight NE-10
Tournament crown on Sunday
EASTON, Mass. (April 23,
2010) – Second-seeded Stonehill College, ranked
fourth in this week's NCAA Division II East regional rankings,
advanced to the Northeast-10 championship match for the
second-straight season with a 5-2 victory over third-seeded and
sixth-ranked Adelphi University in semifinal round action of the
2010 Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis championships at
Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.
Stonehill (17-2, 12-1 NE-10), the
defending NE-10 tournament champions, will host top-seeded Southern
New Hampshire University (18-1, 13-0 NE-10) in Sunday's NE-10
Championship match at 3:30 p.m. Stonehill, who will host both the
men's and women's championship matches on Sunday, is scheduled to
play the matches at Charles Watt Tennis Courts, but should it rain,
the matches will be moved indoors to the Sally Blair Ames Sports
Complex. SNHU advanced to its first women's tennis final with a 5-0
win over fourth-seeded Saint Michael's College today in Manchester,
N.H. The Skyhawks will be making their fifth finals appearance on
Sunday and seeks their second championship.
Adelphi (14-3, 11-2 NE-10) will
await word on an NCAA Tournament bid when they are released on
Wednesday.
Sophomore Lindsey Simmons
(Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) clinched the victory
for Stonehill with her 6-3, 6-1 decision over Adelphi freshman
Michelle Gurda (Greenville, N.Y./Minisink) at
third singles. The Skyhawks carried a 2-1 edge after doubles play
and clinched the win with wins in three of the four singles matches
that went final.
Freshman Chelsea Haedrich
(Islip, N.Y./Islip) was a double-winner for Stonehill,
posting a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Adelphi junior Megan
Margino (Lake Grove, N.Y./Centereach) at sixth singles to
pull the Skyhawks within a point of victory. She also combined with
sophomore Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) for an 8-4
win at third doubles, clinching the 2-1 break after doubles play
for the Skyhawks. Freshman Paige Frost (Brigantine,
N.J./Holy Spirit) improved her singles record to 16-0 in
her first collegiate season with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5.
Freshman Maria Toft
(Copenhagen, Denmark), ranked ninth in the ITA East
Regional singles rankings, played a role in both Adelphi points,
rolling to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Stonehill junior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) at first
singles. She also teamed up with junior Alda Ribeiro (Del
Ray Beach, Fla./Spanish River), the fourth-ranked doubles
team in the region, for a 9-7 decision at first doubles.
