Skyhawks bounce back behind
clean sweep in singles play
EASTON, Mass. (April 7,
2010) – Stonehill College, ranked fifth in the first
NCAA Division II East regional rankings of the spring, bounced back
from its first Conference loss in nearly two years with an 8-1 win
over rival Bentley University in Northeast-10 women's tennis
action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.
Junior Lindsey Herchel
(Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional), sophomore
Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln
School) and freshman Paige Frost (Brigantine,
N.J./Holy Spirit) were all double-winners for Stonehill.
Herchel dropped just two games in posting a straight-sets victory
at first singles after teaming up with senior Samantha
Dircks (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) for an 8-3 win at
first doubles. Toegemann cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at second
singles after combined with Frost for an 8-6 decision at second
doubles. Frost also posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory at fifth singles.
Stonehill held a 2-1 edge following
doubles play, and then didn't drop a set in winning all six
singles matches. Sophomore Sarah Hickey (Lee,
Mass./Lee) improved to 28-0 in singles play over her
two-year career with the Skyhawks with her eighth win of the year,
notching a 6-0, 6-1 victory at fourth singles.
Bentley's lone point came at
third doubles as junior Aimee Tetu (Brunswick,
Maine/Brunswick) and sophomore Kara Murphy
(Worcester, Pa./Methacton) won an 8-6 decision.
Stonehill (10-2, 7-1 NE-10) returns
to action on Saturday when it visits Pace University for an NE-10
matchup at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks return home next Friday, April 17,
for its final regular season home game of the season against Saint
Anselm College at 3 p.m. Bentley (7-6, 6-2 NE-10) hosts Adelphi
University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
