Goal in 102nd minute wins it for the Tigers
EASTON, Mass. (September 4, 2010) – The
Stonehill College women's soccer team lost a 1-0 decision in double
overtime to Holy Family University at Skyhawk Field on Saturday.
Sophomore Katie Helkowski (Levittown,
Pa./Conwell-Egan) netted the winner just over a minute
into the second overtime period.
Helkowski took a shot out of a scramble in front of the net, and
Stonehill junior goalkeeper Sarah
Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) intercepted the high ball but
fell back over the goal line attempting to make the save. Junior
Gina Mansi (Washington Twp., NJ/Washington Twp.)
made five saves for the Tigers to hold off Stonehill and record the
shutout.
The Skyhawks had late chances by senior Kirstie St.
Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy)
and junior Alexandra Murphy
(Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth), but could not seal the win. In
the 73rd minute, St. Martin hit the crossbar from the
right side of the net, and Murphy's attempt on the rebound went
high. They teamed up again in the first overtime period as St.
Martin set up Murphy in front of the net, but Mansi stopped
Murphy's shot to send the game into the second extra frame.
