Skyhawks sweep six singles matches to seal third-straight win
EASTON, Mass. (April 1, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent ITA East Regional rankings, swept all six singles matches to seal an 8-1 victory over Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at the Brown Billone Tennis Club this afternoon.
Senior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) led the double winners for Stonehill as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Le Moyne senior Ken Scheifer (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool). Burke also combined with freshman Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) for an 8-1 win at third doubles. Armstrong was also a double-winner after coasting an 8-0 pro-set match win at sixth singles.
Junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and freshman Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) rounded out the double winners for Stonehill after teaming up for a 9-7 decision at second doubles. Bergeron rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 win over Le Moyne freshman Daryl Johnson (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) at fourth singles, while Hyzak posted a 6-0, 7-5 win over junior Cameron Smith (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) at fifth singles.
Senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), ranked 12th in the latest ITA rankings released this week, picked up his 12th-straight singles win, while sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) also posted a singles victory for Stonehill.
Le Moyne's top doubles pairing of junior Daniel Sullivan (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and Scheifer posted the Dolphins lone point with an 8-5 decision over Fayed and Martin at first doubles.
Stonehill (8-4, 3-1 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts Assumption College for a Northeast-10 Conference match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 2:30 p.m. Le Moyne (7-5, 6-3 NE-10) visits Merrimack College tomorrow at 1 p.m.
