Adelphi Tops Stonehill, 6-3

Armstrong and Hyzak remain unbeaten for singles in NE-10 play

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 10, 2011) – Adelphi University, ranked tenth in the ITA East Regional rankings, took two of three doubles matches and then won the top four singles slots to post a 6-3 victory over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action this afternoon.

Grad student Sebastian Nieves (Bogota, Columbia) and senior Anton Voynov (Burgas, Bolgaria) led the double-winners for Adelphi as the region's seventh-ranked doubles team opened with an 8-2 win at No. 1. Nieves also rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Stonehill senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), ranked 12th regionally, at No. 1 singles, while Voynov picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win over senior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) at No. 2 singles.

Sophomore Gaetan Georges (Maspeth, N.Y.) rounded out the double-winners for Adelphi with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles after teaming up with classmate Adrish Tewarie (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) for an 8-6 triumph at second doubles.

Freshman Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) was a double-winner for Stonehill, combining with Burke for an 8-5 win at third doubles. He also cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Adelphi senior Leonard Bruno (Howard Beach, N.Y.) at No. 6 singles to remain unbeaten in NE-10 play (7-0). Freshman Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) also remained perfect in NE-10 play (9-0) with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tewarie at No. 5.

Stonehill (11-6, 6-3 NE-10) is back in action on Thursday against another regionally ranked opponent at fifth-ranked Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks final regular season home match is Saturday against Saint Anselm College at noon. Adelphi (7-9, 5-3 NE-10) hosts American International College on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
