Burke leads double-winners in final regular season home match
EASTON, Mass. (April 16, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent ITA East Regional rankings, cruised to a 9-0 victory over Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.
Senior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) led the double-winners for Stonehill in his final regular season home match as he stepped up in flight for a 6-1, 6-3 win over Saint Anselm junior Alex Schultheis (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) at No. 1 singles. He also combined with freshman Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) for an 8-1 win at third doubles. Armstrong was also a double-winner by adding a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Hawks sophomore Michael Hanna (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional).
Junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and freshman Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) rounded out the double-winners for the Skyhawks. Bergeron claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles after combining with sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) for an 8-1 win at second doubles. Hyzak and senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) notched an 8-3 win at first doubles before Hyzak added a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles.
Stonehill (12-7, 7-4 NE-10), seeded fifth for the upcoming NE-10 Tournament, will visits fourth-seeded Adelphi University in a quarterfinal round match on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Saint Anselm sees its season come to a close at 2-9 overall and in NE-10 play.
