Stonehill Tops Saint Anselm 8-1 in Regular-Season Finale

Skyhawks will see Hawks again Monday in NE-10 tournament opener

Sarah Hickey was perfect again this season, posting a 13-0 overall singles mark with a win today.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (April 16, 2011) – Stonehill College, currently ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional poll, closed out the regular season Saturday with an 8-1 win over host Saint Anselm College. Stonehill and Saint Anselm will face off again on Monday, when the second-seeded Skyhawks host the seventh-seeded Hawks in the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tennis Championship.

Stonehill opened with a sweep of the doubles matches, dropping only one game as they rolled to the first three wins of the day. Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) defeated Saint Anselm’s Alexandra Lawrence and Erika Sartor 8-1 at No. 1, and Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) blanked the Hawks 8-0 at No. 2. The duo of Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) won their ninth consecutive doubles match in the third spot, shutting out Amanda Brahm and Colleen Kluberdanz 8-0.

Herchel beat Lawrence a second time in the top singles match, 6-2, 6-2, but Sartor got the better of Toegemann at No. 2 for the Hawks’ lone victory, winning the first set after a 7-4 tiebreak and taking the second 6-1. Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) completed another perfect regular season with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6, winning in dominant fashion without dropping a game as she turned in a 13-0 season in singles play to extend her career record to 46-0.

White and Martin followed their doubles win with a pair of straight-sets victories in their singles matches at No. 3 and 5, and Frost was also a double winner as she outlasted Lauren DeGuglielmo 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4.

Stonehill (16-2, 12-1 NE-10) will open the NE-10 Tennis Championship on Monday as the #2 seed, hosting #7 Saint Anselm at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 2:00 p.m.
