NE-10 QUARTERFINALS: #5 Stonehill Rallies Past #4 Adelphi, 5-2

Skyhawks erase 2-1 deficit after doubles play by winning four singles matches

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 19, 2011) – Fifth-seeded Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent ITA East Regional rankings, took the first four singles matches to finish to erase a 2-1 deficit following doubles play and claim a 5-2 triumph over fourth-seeded Adelphi University, ranked tenth in the region, in quarterfinal round action of the 2011 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Tennis Championships this afternoon.

Stonehill (13-7, 7-4 NE-10) advances to Thursday's semifinal round of the NE-10 Tournament and will visit top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University (11-5, 10-1 NE-10), ranked sixth in the region, at 2 p.m. The Penmen advanced today with a 5-0 victory over eighth-seeded Assumption College. Adelphi sees its season come to a close with a 9-10 record overall, 8-3 in NE-10 play.

Junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) clinched the victory for Stonehill with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Adelphi senior Joseph Carbone (North Babylon, N.Y.) at No. 4 singles. Senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), ranked 12th in the region, posted a huge 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Panthers grad student Sebastian Nieves (Bogota, Columbia). Sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) and freshman Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) both collected straight sets wins at No. 3 and 5 singles, respectively to aid the comeback. Two singles matches were left unfinished, with each team leading in one.

Senior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) and freshman Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles) claimed Stonehill's lone doubles victory with an 8-6 win at third doubles over Carbone and senior Leonard Bruno (Howard Beach, N.Y.).

All three doubles matches were tight, with Adelphi's Nieves and senior Anton Voynov (Burgas, Bolgaria), the seventh-ranked doubles pairing in the region, topping Fayed and Hyzak 8-5 at first doubles. Sophomore Gaetan Georges (Maspeth, N.Y.) and Adrish Tewarie (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) claimed an 8-6 win over Bergeron and Martin at second doubles.
