Skyhawks extend win streak to four games without dropping a set
EASTON, Mass. (April 2, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the most recent ITA East Regional rankings, coasted to its fourth-straight win with a 9-0 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.
Five Stonehill players were double-winners as it didn't drop a set in singles play after winning all three doubles matches. Senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), ranked 12th in the ITA East Regional rankings, led the way for the Skyhawks as he cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Assumption senior Jimmy Mongello (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) at No. 1 singles after combining with freshman Nicholas Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) for an 8-1 triumph at first doubles. Hyzak was also a double-winner, notching a 6-2, 6-1 win over sophomore Patrick Murray (Cumberland, R.I./Cumberland) at No. 4 singles.
Senior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) was a double-winner for the Skyhawks, picking up a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, while teaming up with freshman Taylor Whitcomb (Round Top, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) at third doubles. Junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and freshman Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) rounded out the double-winners for Stonehill as the duo opened with an 8-3 win at second doubles. Bergeron also posted a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles, while Armstrong won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. Freshman Kyle Sutter (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) made his collegiate debut for Stonehill and posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
Stonehill (9-4, 4-1 NE-10) returns to action tomorrow when it visits American International College for an NE-10 dual match at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return home to host rival Bentley University on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Assumption (1-7, 1-5 NE-10) hosts Regis College tomorrow at noon.
