Penmen snap Skyhawks’ seven-match winning streak

EASTON, Mass. (April 8, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional poll, sustained their first Northeast-10 Conference defeat of the season in a 6-3 decision to nationally-ranked #29 Southern New Hampshire University.

Sophomore Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and junior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) captured wins for Stonehill at fourth and sixth singles, while the team of junior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and sophomore Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) were winners at third doubles.

Stonehill and Southern New Hampshire opened with a quick split of two doubles matches, as Toegemann and Haedrich took down Samantha Jean and Kara Pease 8-2, and senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and sophomore Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) fell 8-3 to Amber Chandronnait and Catalina Echeverry in the top spot. Junior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) were outlasted 8-5 in a tightly contested matchup at No. 2, trading games with Southern New Hampshire’s Alena Mukdaprakorn and Kirsten Jean before the Penmen rallied to pull ahead.

Frost took her first set 6-1 for an early advantage over Samantha Jean at No. 4 singles. Jean rallied to send the second set to a tiebreak, but Frost held on to finish her off 10-8 for the straight-sets win. Hickey made quick work of the No. 6 slot for the Skyhawks’ first singles victory of the afternoon, dispatching Pease 6-1, 6-1. Herchel was defeated at No. 1 by Chandronnait, ranked 22nd nationally in singles play, and the Penmen also took the second and third singles matches over Toegemann and White as Stonehill saw their seven-match winning streak snapped.

Stonehill (12-2, 8-1 NE-10) is back at home on Sunday to host Adelphi University at noon.
