Skyhawks bounce back from tough midweek loss for comfortable win
EASTON, Mass. (April 9, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the ITA East Region rankings, bounced back from a tough midweek loss to post an 8-1 victory over Pace University in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts today.
Sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) led the double-winners for Stonehill as he stepped up to No. 2 singles to claim a 6-4, 1-6, 10-7 victory over Pace freshman Michael Metesan (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Kent). He also combined with junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) for an 8-4 decision at second doubles. Bergeron was also a double-winner for the Skyhawks, picking up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
Freshmen Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) were also double-winners for Stonehill. Hyzak posted a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles after combining with senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) for an 8-1 victory at first doubles. Armstrong didn't drop a point in his straight sets win at No. 5 singles after teaming up with senior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) for an 8-0 win at third doubles.
Junior Ignacio Ortiz (Briarcliff, N.Y./La Colina) picked up the lone point for Pace with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Burke at No. 1 singles.
Stonehill (11-5, 6-2 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it visits Adelphi University for a key NE-10 dual match at noon. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, April 16, to host Saint Anselm College in their regular season finale at noon. Pace (3-7, 3-5 NE-10) hosts Franklin Pierce University on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
