Stonehill Blanks Franklin Pierce, 9-0

Skyhawks win 15 of 16 sets played on way to victory in NE-10 opener


Junior Chris Martin was a double winner for the Skyhawks in today's win over Franklin Pierce.
EASTON, Mass. (September 25, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings, opened its fall dual match schedule with a 9-0 victory over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

All six Stonehill players were double-winners as the Skyhawks won 15 of 16 sets on their way to the win. Senior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and junior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) combined to post a hard-fought 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles as Stonehill swept the doubles matches to set the tone for the afternoon. Martin won a back and forth 6-0, 0-6, 10-4 decision over Franklin Pierce sophomore Patrick Gilhuly (Killingworth, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) at No. 2 singles, while Bergeron registered a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win over freshman Christopher Brewer (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) at No. 3.

Freshman Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) coasted to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles after combining with sophomore Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) for an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles. Hyzak also picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and freshman Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) rounded out the double-winners for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (1-0, 1-0 NE-10) is back in action next Saturday, October 1, when it visits Saint Michael's College for a Northeast-10 clash at 10 a.m. The Skyhawks return home the weekend of October 8-9 when it hosts the Skyhawk Invitational. Franklin Pierce (1-1, 0-1 NE-10) visits Bentley University next Sunday at 3 p.m.
