Stonehill Rolls by Saint Rose, 9-0


Freshman Meryl Lawrence didn't drop a game in singles and doubles play, collecting her seventh-straight singles win for the Skyhawks.

Gilligan and Lawrence sweep their way to double wins

EASTON, Mass. (March 29, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the first NCAA Division II East Regional rankings released today, cruised to its sixth straight win with a 9-0 decision over The College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Freshmen Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) and Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) were double winners for Stonehill without dropping a game in singles or doubles play. The duo combined for an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles and then claimed identical 6-0, 6-0 triumphs in singles action. Gilligan topped Saint Rose junior Sarah Klein (Forestburgh, N.Y./Monticello) at No. 3 singles, while Lawrence notched her seventh-straight singles win with a victory over freshman Maggie Moran (Wallkill, N.Y./Wallkill) at No. 6.

Senior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) and junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) were also double winners for Stonehill, starting by teaming up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Hickey improved to 30-0 over her career in NE-10 singles matches with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Saint Rose sophomore Keri Robinson (Highland, N.Y./Highland) at No.5 singles, while Frost topped sophomore Kim Szkudlarek (Willington, Conn./Edwin O. Smith) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.

Senior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and junior Jennifer Denyes (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephens Episcopal) both notched singles victories for Stonehill, while senior Bacall Brooks (York, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) and junior Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) combined to post an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Toegemann rallied for a hard-fought 3-6, 6-0, 14-12 triumph at No. 1 singles, while Denyes won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.

Stonehill (10-3, 8-0 NE-10) is off until Sunday when it hosts Saint Michael's College, ranked tenth in the region, for a key NE-10 matchup, at 11 a.m. Saint Rose (4-4, 4-4 NE-10) hosts Assumption College on Sunday at noon.
