Stonehill Rallies Past Le Moyne, 5-4

 


Freshman Eric Ringstad posted wins at No. 1 singles and No. 2 doubles to lead the way for Stonehill.

Skyhawks erase deficit after doubles play behind Ringstad and Hyzak

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (April 7, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked eighth in the NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, won four of six singles matches to overcome a 2-1 deficit following doubles play and rally for a 5-4 victory over Le Moyne College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Nottingham High School this afternoon.

Freshman Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) and sophomore Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) led the way for Stonehill as a double-winners as the duo combined to notch the Skyhawks lone doubles victory with a 8-0 shutout of Le Moyne senior Joseph Persia (Spencerport, N.Y./Spencerport) and sophomore Alessandro Nieves (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) at No.2. Ringstad also posted a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over senior Daniel Sullivan (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) at No. 1 singles to clinch the win for Stonehill, while Hyzak topped senior James Shelp (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Sutherland) 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 2 singles.

Senior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and freshman Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) each helped the Stonehill rally with singles wins. Alaimo posted a 6-1, 6-3 win over senior Andrew Gleason (Gorham, Maine/Cheverus) at No. 4 singles, while Bergeron topped sophomore Daryl Johnson (Minoa, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa) 6-0, 7-5 at No. 5.

Persia and freshman Shane Evans (Oswego, N.Y./Pulaski) posted singles wins for Le Moyne at No. 3 and 6, respectively. Persia topped Stonehill junior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) 6-3, 6-3, while Evans held off sophomore Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. Sullivan and senior Ken Schiefer (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) combined for an 8-1 win over Martin and Bergeron at No. 1 doubles, while Shelp and Johnson teamed up for an 8-2 win over Alaimo and Armstrong at No. 3.

Stonehill (12-3, 6-2 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday when it visits Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Wednesday to host Adelphi University at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 2 p.m. Le Moyne (6-8, 5-5 NE-10) hosts Saint Michael's College next Saturday at 11 a.m.
