Men's Tennis Edges Assumption, 5-4

Gagnon leads Skyhawks win singles and doubles wins

WORCESTER, Mass. (March 23, 2016) – Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region rankings, opened its spring Northeast-10 schedule with a 5-4 victory over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Assumption Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Sophomore Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) paced Stonehill by earning both singles and doubles wins. He and freshman Michael Doody (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) combined for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles as the Skyhawks gained a 2-1 edge following doubles matches. Gagnon added a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 5 singles against Assumption junior Casey Hodor (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken). Sophomore Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) rallied for a key 6-7 (7-3), 6-1, 6-4) triumph at No. 4 singles against freshman Reb Mariano (New London, Connecticut/Saint Andrew's School).

Senior Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) also collected a singles point for Stonehill with his 6-4, 6-0 decision at No. 6 against junior Tom Knight (Wilbraham, Massachusetts/Minnechaug Regional). Sophomores Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) clinched the 2-1 Skyhawks lead following doubles play with their 8-4 win at No. 1.

Junior Marco Leung (Macao) was a double-winner for Assumption, teaming up with Mariano for a 9-7 decision at No. 2 doubles. Leung followed that with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory at No. 3 singles against junior Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic).

Stonehill (5-4, 2-0 NE-10) is off until next Tuesday when it hosts American International College at 3 p.m. Assumption (1-3, 0-1 NE-10) visits Merrimack College on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
