Men's Tennis Rolls Against AIC, 8-1


Sophomore Thomas Bellio won at No. 1 singles and doubles this afternoon.

Bellio leads Skyhawks to third straight win

EASTON, Mass. (March 29, 2016) – Stonehill College remained unbeaten in conference play with an 8-1 victory over American International College in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action in the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex this afternoon.

Sophomores Thomas Bellio (Saint Joseph, Michigan/Saint Joseph) and Tom Buckley (Hebron, Connecticut/RHAM) led the double-winners for Stonehill as it claimed its third straight win since returning from its spring break trip. Bellio teamed up with sophomore Nikolay Lisichenok (Danvers, Massachusetts/Danvers) for an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch a sweep of the three doubles matches for the Skyhawks. Bellio followed that up with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles against American International freshman Ricardo Martinez (Valencia, Spain).

Buckley and sophomore Jeffrey Gagnon (Providence, Rhode Island/The Wheeler School) combined for an 8-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles for Stonehill. Buckley added a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles against sophomore Johno May (Mahtomedi, Minnesota), while Gagnon rounded out the Skyhawks double-winners with a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 5 against senior Michael Schulze (Ehningen, Germany).

Senior Gerard Tierney (Marshfield, Massachusetts/Marshfield) and junior Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Saint Joseph School) also earned singles wins for Stonehill, while freshmen Michael Doody (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) and Dimitri Vlassov (Marblehead, Massachusetts/Marblehead) teamed up to record an 8-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles.

Postgrad James Worrall (Epsom, England) earned American International's point with a 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 comeback win over Lisichenok at No. 2 singles.

Stonehill (6-4, 3-0 NE-10) is back in action on Friday when it hosts Wheaton College for a non-conference match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 3:30 p.m. American International (0-4, 0-4 NE-10) hosts Southern New Hampshire University at Central High School on Saturday at noon.
