Baseball Shuts Out Saint Michael's Twice

A quartet of pitchers allowed only eight hits in the doubleheader


Young tossed 6.0 scoreless innings, striking out eight 

COLCHESTER, Vermont (April 27, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team earned its third and fourth shutouts of the season with victories over Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Michael's College with scores of 6-0 and 12-0 Sunday to sweep the series from the Purple Knights.

The Skyhawks are now 19-24 overall and 10-13 in NE10 Conference play, while the Purple Knights fall to 8-25 and 5-18 in Conference play.

Game 1: Stonehill 6 – Saint Michael's 0
Harrison Sabo, who went 2-for-5 with one run, a RBI, and a walk, recorded his eighth double of the season in the top of the first inning scoring Matthew Rocco from first for a 1-0 lead. Saint Michael's responded in the bottom of the frame with two hits, but Michael Young retired the side with one of his eight strikeouts of the game leaving two on base.

In the top of the third, Sabo led off with a single and Aidan Wilde, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in game one, walked for a chance for Rob Duarte to bring home more runs. Duarte reached on a throwing error on his sacrifice bunt and both Sabo and Wilde scored on the error for a 3-0 lead. But, the junior was stranded on third as the Purple Knights went three straight to get out of the inning.

Stonehill put up a run in the sixth and seventh, as Wilde reached first on a single through the right side and stole two bases before advancing home on a throwing error for the fourth run of the game, 4-0. With two outs and a runner on second, Matt Donlan drove in Patrick Downey for a 5-0 advantage.

Connor Williams came in for relief in the seventh inning, as he threw 3.0 innings facing 10 batters allowing one hit and striking out three batters for his first-career save. The Skyhawks' got the bases loaded in the top of the ninth and with two outs, Sabo walked to bring in the final run of the game with Williams retiring three straight in the bottom of the frame for a 6-0 victory.

Game 2: Stonehill 12 – Saint Michael's 0
Junior Michael White retired 13-straight to begin the game as both sides of the scorecard remained 0-0 through the fourth inning. Stonehill was finally able to get a run across in the top of the fifth with Downey scoring on a wild pitch and Noah Lucier advancing to second for a 1-0 lead. Saint Michael's saw their first hit of the game as Dante Moran singled to center field, but it stopped there with a pop up and a fielder's choice to end the inning.


Downey went 5-for-9 in the two games with four runs scored and two RBI

With four runs in the fourth, Stonehill extended its lead to five, 5-0, with a two-out rally including five of the Skyhawk's 13 hits.  Once more, Stonehill's offense took over as five hits and four errors scored seven runs in the top of the ninth for a 12-0 victory over the Purple Knights.

Five Skyhawks recorded more than one hits in the game, including William Kelleher, Sabo, Downey, Matt Farragherand Lucier. On the mound, White matched his career high of nine strikeouts as he went on to win his fifth game of the season.

Stonehill looks to take the final game of the series against Bentley University, as the Falcons are 2-0 against the Skyhawks, on Tuesday, April 30 with a first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at DeFelice Field.
