Adelphi Defeats Men's Tennis, 6-1

Balestero and Sole lead four double-winners for Panthers

EASTON, Mass. (April 20, 2021) – Adelphi University, ranked No. 9 in the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, clinched home court for the opening round of the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with a 6-1 victory over Stonehill College, ranked No. 10 in the region, in NE10 men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon. 

Highlights

  • Senior Gabriel Balestero and junior Pietro Sole led four double-winners for Adelphi on the afternoon, combining for a win at No. 1 doubles that clinched the doubles point for the Panthers and then adding victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.
  • Sophomores Salomon Arce Lima and Henrique Souzak rounded out the double-winners in the match for Adelphi.
  • Senior Aleksander Lazowski earned a win at No. 6 singles for Stonehill on Senior Day, battling past Adelphi senior David Leader in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill got off to a flying start, with senior Russell White and sophomore Luke Nickerson breezing past Adelphi senior Luke Attride-Stirling and sophomore Andrew Ray at No. 2 doubles, 6-0.
  • Adelphi rallied with Arce Lima and Sole winning at No. 3 doubles and then Balestero and Sole clinching the doubles point at No. 1, with each pairing posting 6-2 wins against their Stonehill counterparts.
  • Souza notched Adelphi's first singles point with his 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Nickerson.
  • Attride-Sterling pulled Adelphi within a point of the match win with his 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Stonehill senior Trent Newman.
  • Balestero then provided the match-clinching point for Adelphi, holding off a second-set rally from Stonehill sophomore Christian Duffy, for a 6-2, 7-5 decision at No. 1.

Noteworthy

  • Following the match, Stonehill honored its five seniors playing in their final home match today: Joey Conrod, Vincent Huynh, Lazowski, Newman and White.
  • Seven of Stonehill's eight matches this season have been against team's ranked in the Oracle/ITA Division II East Region rankings.

Up Next

Stonehill (1-7, 1-7 NE10) wraps up its regular season schedule on Thursday, when it visits Le Moyne College, ranked No. 5 in the East Region, for an NE10 matchup. The Skyhawks will then open the NE10 Tournament with a first round matchup on the road on Saturday. Adelphi (5-3, 5-3 NE10) is off until opening NE10 Tournament play on Saturday.
