BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 19, 2024) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision in Brookville, New York to Northeast Conference opponent Long Island University Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks drop to 10-20 overall and 6-10 in conference play, while the Sharks improve to 16-17 overall and 14-5 against conference opponents.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Trey Ciulla-Hall drove home his 24th run of the season for the Skyhawks.
- Redshirt sophomore Sam Parks and senior Blaine Lidsky each registered extra-base hits against the Sharks.
- Junior Ryan Douglas (2-5) matched his season-high total of four strikeouts, despite taking the loss, over 5.0 innings on the mound.
- Senior Carlton Harper launched his second homerun of the season for LIU.
- Freshman Nicholas Delvecchio and Harper were tied for the game-high at three hits apiece.
- Senior Garrett Yawn (2-3) picked up his second win of the season after allowing one earned run and striking out seven over 8.0 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
LIU wasted little time jumping out to an early lead. A pair of fielding miscues in the first allowed the Sharks to take a two-run advantage after the opening frame. With a scoreless second inning on either side in the books, LIU would extend its lead to four with a run in both the third and fourth innings.
A sacrifice fly by redshirt senior Jake Mastillo in the third scored graduate student Seth Surrett, who led off the inning with a free pass. In the fourth, an RBI single down the left field line off the bat of Delvecchio made the score 4-0 in favor of the Sharks.
Stonehill would cut the deficit to three in the top half of the fifth inning. After Parks drilled a one-out double down the leftfield line, postgrad outfielder Conor Kiely would step into the dish and move Parks 90 feet away from home with a groundout to the LIU shortstop. Ciulla-Hall followed and lined the first pitch he saw into the left centerfield gap, scoring Parks and cutting the gap to 4-1.
However, this would be as close as the Skyhawks would get to level the score, as a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fifth and sixth innings, before adding two more in the eighth, would put the game out of reach for Stonehill. Despite having two runners on board in the top of the ninth, senior PJ Moritz would take the ball on the hill for LIU and slam the door shut, sealing the 10-1 series-opening victory for the Sharks.
